You can determine the country-of-origin, the circa date and often the fineness and type of metal. I had a set of the Tardy books and they have now been stashed in a dark corner of my library - this book is both easier to read (it is also in English), faster to locate an unknown mark as well as highly detailed when you decipher a mark.
